Matthew McConaughey has been a big name in the world of film and television for over 30 years now, enjoying a breakthrough role in Richard Linklater’s 1993 coming-of-age comedy, Dazed and Confused. With such a long and successful career, it is hardly surprising that his net worth is very healthy.
It is estimated that McConaughey’s current net worth is around $160 million. He has appeared in some of the biggest box office hits of the last 20 years, including The Wolf of Wall Street, Interstellar, and Sing. It is thought that he can now command at least $20 million for a top movie and reportedly turned down a $15 million offer to star in a reboot film version of Magnum PI.
But it is not just the entertainment business that brings in the cash for McConaughey. Like every other well-known celebrity, McConaughey can command impressive fees for endorsing products. He has lent his name to Lincoln cars and tech company Salesforce in the past – enough to bring in around $10 million annually.
Who is Matthew McConaughey?
Matthew McConaughey started off his professional career in TV commercials in the 1980s and his Hollywood good looks helped him get ahead in what is an incredibly competitive industry. That breakthrough in 1993 in Dazed and Confused catapulted him into another sphere of stardom but his career has been far from one-dimensional.
By the mid-1990s, McConaughey had landed his first leading man roles and appeared in some of the biggest films of the late 20th century. But he became better known for romantic comedies at the start of the 2000s, starring in titles like The Wedding Planner, Fool’s Gold, and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.
It was at that point that McConaughey began to feel as if he was being typecast and took some time out to rethink his career. A change in the type of roles he started to take on after 2011 was dubbed the “McConaissance”. After working with Steven Soderbergh and Richard Linklater again, McConaughy won an Oscar for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club.
He has since appeared in top TV shows like True Detective and has continued to appear in a wide range of films, although without the huge success of those during the years 2011 to 2015. But he is still a very marketable name in Hollywood and has certainly thrown off the perceptions surrounding his earlier career as a one-dimensional actor.
